Emergency Information

how can i be prepared for...

spotlight on: Tornadoes

The recent tornado that hit Hattiesburg is a reminder that Mississippi has had its fair share of tornadoes. Over the past 60 years, over 1800 tornadoes have been spotted in the state of Mississippi, with 2012 having 44 tornadoes. Historically, April has the greatest number of tornadoes and the most violent.

Being prepared for tornadoes is vitally important and the Mississippi Department of Emergency Management has information on how to prepare for a tornado and what to have on hand for a Disaster Kit. The Federal Emergency Management Agency also has a site called Ready.gov with extensive information on preparing and responding to natural disasters such as tornadoes.
