Requirements For Your Initial License

Please review the requirements below and acknowledge that you have read them.

Applicant must be twenty-one (21) years of age and of good moral character.

Graduate from an approved medical, osteopathic or podiatric school.

If a US medical or osteopathic graduate, one year of ACGME approved post graduate training
in the US or Canada.

If an International medical or osteopathic graduate, three years of ACGME approved post graduate training in the US or Canada. If you are applying to sit for USMLE Step 3 in Mississippi, only one year will be required; however, three years must be completed in order to receive a permanent license.

If a podiatric graduate, one year of APMA approved post graduate training in the US or Canada.

Successful completion of an approved licensing examination, i.e. FLEX, NBME, USMLE, NBOME, COMLEX, NBPE, PMLexis.

All three steps of USMLE must be complete within 7-years.

For MDs and DOs, if passing of licensing examination has been 10 years or more, you must
be certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties or take and pass the Special Purpose Examination (SPEX).

Fifth Pathway Graduates must be certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

If it has been more than 3 years since actively practicing medicine, a Board approved clinical skills assessment is required.

Certified or notarized copy of birth certificate or passport must be submitted.

Copy of medical, osteopathic, or podiatric school diploma must be submitted. If diploma is not in English, a certified or notarized translation must be submitted.

If official name is different from the name listed on birth certificate or passport, certified or notarized documentation of the official name change must be submitted.

Passport type photograph of applicant must be submitted with release of information.

Upon completion and approval of application, you will be required to appear at the office of the Board for a personal interview, take the jurisprudence examination and submit for a criminal background check (fingerprinting) which will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

Supporting documentation must be submitted as soon as possible once the application is submitted. Applications will not be processed until all supporting documentation has been received.
