The Mississippi Autism Board consists of five (5) members appointed by the Governor and Lieutenant Governor. The board consists of one (1) licensed psychologist practicing in the area of applied behavior analysis, three (3) licensed behavior analysts, and one (1) non-licensed public member who is the family member of a recipient of applied behavior analysis services to provide for the licensure and regulation of the practice of applied behavior analysis.

The Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) consist of the eight public universities: Alcorn State University, Delta State University, Jackson State University, Mississippi State University, Mississippi University for University, Mississippi Valley State University, The University of Mississippi, The University of Southern Mississippi, including the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Mississippi Cooperative Extension Service, Mississippi Agricultural, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine, ten off-campus centers, and various other locations throughout the state. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools is the accrediting body for each of the public universities in Mississippi.

The state of Mississippi provides about $40 million each year to help students go to college. 

The state offers three undergraduate grant programs: 

  • HELP, which awards full tuition for students with financial need;
  • MTAG, which awards $500 per year to freshmen and sophomores and $1,000 per year to juniors and seniors; and
  • MESG, which awards $2,500 per year to high-achieving students with a 29 or higher ACT and 3.5 or higher GPA. 

All three grant programs require students to enroll full-time each term.

The Mississippi Department of Education, which operates under the direction and supervision of the State Superintendent of Education, implements a system-wide plan of performance, policy and direction for public education in Mississippi. The Mississippi Board of Education, in conjunction with the State Superintendent of Education, adopts and maintains a curriculum and a course of study to be used in public schools that is designed to prepare Mississippi's students to become productive citizens, parents, employees and leaders. The Board also regulates all matters arising in the practical administration of the school system not otherwise provided for and regulates issues such as curriculum, teacher standards and certification, student testing, accountability and school accreditation.

Established in 1854, the Mississippi School for the Deaf (MSD) is the state's official school for all children in the state who are deaf or hard of hearing. From the earliest detection of a hearing problem, we can provide children with the communication skills and confidence they need to live happy, productive lives. Our dedicated teachers are certified professionals, recognized as leaders in their field of instruction. They help each student reach their full potential by providing an excellent education in a friendly and caring environment.
